Organizers of the 38th annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic are calling this year’s event a resounding success, as the annual fundraiser exceeded its fundraising goal of $92,000, raising critical support for new programs, patient safety enhancements and advanced equipment at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center.
“This event is a true testament to the generosity and spirit of our community,” Mark O’Hern, president/CEO of WVU Hospitals East, said. “Thanks to the incredible support of our donors, volunteers and sponsors, these funds will directly enhance the safety, quality, and overall experience of care we provide to patients and families across our region.”
The golf classic, hosted Monday at The Woods Resort in Hedgesville, drew 220 golfers to the fairways. Co-chairs Matt Stickel and Bradley Freeman shared that the winning team of Chris James, Shawn Neely, Rich Raposa, and Ricky Robinson shot a 54 to claim first place in the tournament.
Proceeds from this year’s event will help fund:
– The new Cancer Infusion Center coming to Jefferson Medical Center, increasing access to lifesaving treatments closer to home
– Patient-focused safety enhancements in Berkeley Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Unit.
– Advanced equipment for the WVU Medicine Heart and Vascular Institute clinics in the eastern region.
– New emergency department technology to elevate the patient experience at both Berkeley and Jefferson medical centers.
The event was presented by elite sponsor Hoar Construction, presenting sponsors United Bank/United Wealth Management and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute and over 80 additional loyal sponsors.
“We thank all of our supporters who year after year make our golf fundraiser a huge success as one of the premier golf events in the region,” Teresa McCabe, president of the WVU Hospitals East Foundation, said.
Over the past 38 years, the Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic has raised more than $2 million to support equipment purchases, new programs, and enhanced patient services across the Eastern Panhandle.
Next year’s tournament is set for Monday, June 1, 2026, at The Club at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown.
