In a Tuesday briefing, the Smith County Commissioners Court was told the new county courthouse was about one-third of the way complete.

The court was given a progress update of 35% from Hoar Construction Project Executive Stephen Flournoy. He also said the budget and current time frame is well within the goal.

Crews were unable to use the crane for two days, when the 250-foot on-site crane was struck by lightning. The strike was caught on camera. So far, crews have experienced 92 weather days. Only 43 days have been claimed since crews managed to work overtime and weekend to stay on track.

Over 11,000 cubic yards, or 1,100 concrete trucks, have gone into the build as well as over 1,000 tons of rebar- equal to about 500 F-150 trucks.

The construction is part of phase 2 of the $179 million bond project. The courthouse is expected to be completed by the fall of 2026.

Phase 3 is set to include the demolition of the current courthouse.
