Meet John Holman. He’s a Preconstruction Manager that has been in the industry for several years and with us at Hoar for two. John is currently in North Texas leading our preconstruction process on every project. Here’s a little more about him:

What’s your day-to-day look like?

My day-to-day involves a variety of tasks, including drawing takeoff and review, estimate creation, design meetings, trade partner solicitation, and relationship building.

What’s the one lesson you’ve learned in this industry (or in previous career industries) that’s stuck with you?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned in this industry is clear written communication; being specific and clear in your written communications makes everything easier down the road.

What’s the last thing you did to help make a project run smoother/last thing you did to serve a client better?

The most valuable thing that I’ve started doing is attending early project quarterlies. The short feedback loop with our project teams, who are living projects day-to-day, gives me the ability to adjust courses quicker and implement lessons learned immediately, as opposed to a project debrief months later.

What are you working on now?

We’re working on a variety of projects and pursuits at the moment. From a small medical complex to a city park, to an entertainment venue. I’m really enjoying learning about a variety of product types and how each one is unique with its own unique challenges.

How did you get started in the industry/get started on your career path?

After graduate school, I moved into a design role with an MEP Engineering consultant; I really enjoyed thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics in school, so it was a natural fit. From there, I developed relationships and took opportunities as they presented themselves, leading me to Hoar.

What’s the best part of your job?

Collaborating with our project teams and learning more about the day-to-day construction. They have a great attitude and many great tools and techniques that make me better at my role.

What’s your favorite band or song?

Turnpike Troubadours.

What’s your favorite movie?

Tombstone.

What’s your best/funniest/fondest memory from your time with Hoar Construction?

By far, winning bar trivia with my Accountable Manager cohort. You’d be very surprised at people’s knowledge of things outside of construction.

What’s your proudest accomplishment?

Having our GMP submission approved for a university event center. It was a long, involved process, and bringing it across the finish line to start the project was very rewarding.
