Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children

The Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in Birmingham is the best children’s hospital in the state, one that families from across Alabama seek out in times of crisis.

The hospital needed a facility to match its incredible reputation, one that would inspire confidence and provide comfort for families in need. To achieve this, Hoar Construction undertook what would become the largest hospital project in Alabama’s history. The construction included 144 new patient rooms, 21 elevators, and 4 connecting pedestrian bridges. Technology was integral to this project, with innovative usage of iPads and BIM technology enabling us to resolve more than 20,000 above-ceiling clashes before construction was even underway. Throughout this high-tech, high complexity project, the children for whom we were building this facility were never far from our minds. Our team stenciled the names of more than 200 of these young patients on the foundation of the building, as a reminder that the most important thing we were building was hope.
