Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart

Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart, the oldest Catholic hospital in Florida, is the only children’s hospital serving families in the Northwest Florida, South Alabama, and South Georgia regions. Hoar Construction provided construction management services for a major expansion to the facility.

This expansion allows the hospital to serve more women and children in the area, provide even more specialized care, consolidate pediatric services, and expand women’s services.
The project includes approximately 175,000 square feet of new construction and 13,000 square feet of renovation and backfill. The new four-story tower addition houses a pediatric emergency department and trauma center, pediatric surgery, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), pediatric oncology, extended care/observation beds, and support services for the clinical departments and families. It also includes an expansion to Sacred Heart’s Regional Perinatal Center, a unit dedicated to patients with high-risk pregnancies.

Our team designed a rack system to allow the construction of segmented sections of mechanical and plumbing pipe to be installed, tested, and insulated in a factory-controlled environment. Using prefabricated racks enabled testing and inspection to be done from a standing position as opposed to being inspected on a ladder, which creates a safer working environment. Prefabricating the units also helped to reduce the coordination and installation time on site.
