Bridge Street Town Centre
It is not often that Hoar Construction builds an extension of one of the largest retail sites in Alabama on a lake bed, but in the case of Bridge Street Town Centre, that is exactly what we did. Hoar was selected as general contractor for the drainage and fill-in of a 4.5-acre lake and the construction of Phase III at Bridge Street, a project that took place while the existing lifestyle center stayed in full operation.
More than 16,000 truck-loads of dirt and gravel were used to raise the lake to an acceptable grade level for construction; however, because the soil had been saturated for years, issues with settlement were a concern. After strenuous geotechnical testing, the site was deemed ready for work. To alleviate potential settlement issues and increase the quality of the project, our team installed caissons, a foundation system normally used for high-rise buildings. Hoar completed Phase III including the building pad for a 170,000 square foot, 2-story flagship Belk Department Store, a 903-car parking deck, and four additional retail buildings totaling 50,000 square feet.
