Jones Valley Teaching Farm

Jones Valley Teaching Farm (JVTF) is a Birmingham, AL-based non-profit organization whose mission is to provide world-class, food-based education to pre-K through 12th-grade students throughout the greater Birmingham area. Full-time instructors at Jones Valley collaborate with teachers to help students connect with food, farming, and the culinary arts through standards-based, cross-curricular lessons.

Prior to the new construction of the Center for Food Education, JVTF’s operations were based out of a small trailer but the need for more room was apparent. The newly renovated downtown campus includes a large kitchen and classroom space making it possible to adequately accommodate more students, teachers, and nearby residents. The outdoor mass timber gathering pavilion, a riff on the traditional farmstead porch, will be in the heart of the campus, welcoming visitors and connecting the interior education spaces to the farm.

Our portion of work included the removal of an existing structure and community garden shed and associated site work as well as the construction of the new center for food education consisting of an education wing that includes a teaching kitchen, an administrative wing, and a farm facility totaling approximately 12,000 GSF.
