David Hill is a Project Executive with 15 years’ experience in the construction industry. He is an experienced higher education project leader and is currently leading several projects from a banking headquarters expansion to a new multifamily development. 1. What’s your current day-to-day look like?
In my current role I’m overseeing several projects so it’s important to stay organized. I hit the ground running in the morning, so I try to be intentional about spending time at the end of each day to plan the next. This helps me stay focused.
2. What’s the one lesson you’ve learned in this industry that’s stuck with you?
You can never be too proactive. We are constantly trying to mitigate risk — as soon as you feel like you’ve got everything under control, a new challenge will arise.
3. Describe the last challenge/problem you solved on the job?
We were facing major scope milestones in various phases across one of our projects. To ensure we were successful, we broke each major scope into separate, mini projects to help organize production.
4. How did you get started in the industry?
My dad was a superintendent. I spent many summers working on his projects. He worked me so hard that I promised him I would never work in construction. Turns out, it’s just in my blood and I really love this industry.
5. What’s the best part of your job?
Developing people and seeing them achieve their goals. I enjoy seeing them recognize their own potential as they grow in their career and personal life.
6. What’s your most memorable Higher Education project?
Houston Baptist University- Academic Center. The University was very happy with the outcome of the project, but the most memorable part was that my Dad was the superintendent and we got to work side by side.
7. How is working on a Higher Education campus different/more challenging from other construction sites?
Working on an active campus, you always want to minimize your impact on student life so that students, facility, and visitors can continue to enjoy their on-campus life without being disturbed by construction.
8. What’s your fondest or funniest memory from your time with Hoar Construction?
Watching leadership run a 40-yard dash in the office with winner take all rights was pretty hilarious.
9. What’s your proudest accomplishment?
Seeing my teammates succeed/achieve their goals. Our people are our proudest accomplishment and Hoar really emphasizes this.
10. What’s your hidden talent?
I’m an experienced skating rink DJ.
11. Why do enjoy working in Higher Education construction?
It’s gratifying to know that your hard work has positively impacted children/students to further their education in a quality environment.
