Joshua Wallace is a project manager with experience building mixed-use, multifamily, and entertainment projects across Florida. Here’s eight questions to get to know him.
1. What’s your current day-to-day look like?
My day to day consists of arriving on site, reviewing emails/details/drawings, walking the site, and having discussions with ownership and trade partners. Then, I focus on tracking schedule progression for construction and reviewing pricing for changes in scope directed by ownership. I always aim to plan my days out but with new details to review and progress happening every day, each day is different.
2. What’s the one lesson you’ve learned in this industry that’s stuck with you?
I actually have two lessons I like to live by: trust but verify, and, if it isn’t captured in writing then it didn’t happen.
3. How did you get started in the industry?
I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Civil Engineering, and then moved to Orlando in 2013 to start with Hoar as a Project Engineer. I have a design background, but construction interested me as it was a mix of reviewing drawings but also being in the field to see how things come together. Being a former student athlete, I’ve always loved being on a team and working together towards a common goal.
4. What’s the last thing you did to help make a project run smoother?
Be proactive. Whether it was looking ahead at a detail that may cause disruption in the schedule or figuring a way to bring savings to the job, the team and I aim to better the job from a quality, schedule and budget perspective every day.
5. What’s the best part of your job?
Problem solving or bringing resolutions to the difficult matters on a job. That, and working with a team to bring projects across the finish line. The work isn’t always easy but it is always worth it.
6. What’s your fondest memory from your time with Hoar Construction?
On my first project, we had a river dammed at a theme park and it broke the day before a key phase in the project. So, that day I found myself with a shovel, working to rebuild the dam. The entire team stayed there late into the night, got the dam rebuilt and the water pulled out of the area so the critical work could take place the next day.
7. What’s your hidden talent?
Singing and dancing. I should try out for America’s Got Talent.
8. What’s your proudest accomplishment?
Every project opening. The hard work, difficult conversations, and the massive amount of time and effort put into meeting opening where the client is happy with the final product as well is always worth it.
