Firm’s D.C. division adds to expanding portfolio with first embassy project.
Hoar Construction announced today that the firm’s DC Division is commencing work on the renovation of the Embassy of Kenya, a structure built in the nation’s capital in 1908. The renovation will include a facelift for the Beaux Arts façade, along with a new roof, HVAC upgrade, low-voltage security system, and full window restoration. The interior will get fresh paint and new flooring as well.
“This is the first time the company has worked on an embassy project, which marks the latest chapter of our impressive growth story in Washington,” said Jeff Kruse, division vice president. “Our team is ready for the challenge of working on a structure built more than 100 years ago. The embassy also will remain open through the entire construction process, so we have been planning our work in phases so that staff operations can proceed normally.”
The scope for the first phase of work includes abatement and demolition for added mechanical, electrical, and fire sprinkler components. In addition, to accommodate the new central air system the team will be adding steel and building out new shafts. The new HVAC system also will replace 50 window units and require window restoration, including stripping, painting, and replacing glass where it is needed. The team is also restoring an old elevator, with a brass accordion gate that encloses.
“Our consultant determined that the passenger elevator is likely from the 1950s,” said Jessica Yarbrough, assistant project manager. “The materials needed for the restoration are definitely not off-the-shelf items, so we’re working with a specialty contractor to ensure the elevator looks, and works, like new.
Hoar has expanded its presence in the Washington area. Other work already underway includes Christ the King Chapel, an on-campus chapel at Christendom College in Front Royal, Va., which is slated to be completed in 2021.
Anderson Cooper Group Architects, which has worked on several diplomatic projects over the years, is a partner on the Embassy of Kenya renovation. The work is scheduled to be complete by spring 2021.
